Tips for the Best Backyard Bird Feeding Season
Bird feeding is one of North America’s favorite autumn and winter pastimes. When the warm days of summer turn to crisp and cool autumn, bird feeding tends to pick up. Once the snow begins to fly, and eventually set in; your winter birdfeeder’s guests have probably settled in for following months.
Because of migration patterns and the availability of food the birds you find at your feeder will change with the seasons. Sometimes, but rarely, birds that would normally not stay for the winter may choose to do so if they find a steady and reliable source of food. A great example of this would be ducks and geese wintering in the city park’s ponds or the local feed store!
Bird feeding is a great source of food for local birds, and if you feed good quality feeds, your birdfeeder should not interfere with any natural patterns or habits that the local birds have. Make sure that your feeders are clean though; as they can become a source of infection should you have an infected bird visit and pass along the sickness. Bacteria and mold can also infect birds and make them sick. So make sure that your birdfeeder is free of anything like that.
Other things to keep in mind are your own pets. If you have cats, they will soon catch on to your bird visitors and will quickly begin to dine on them. If you have cats, keep them inside during the day when the birds are at your feeder. Dogs can harass the birds as well, depending on your dog. Many dogs will simply watch the birds, but if your dog is bothered by them and begins to bark or chase them, promptly move the feeder or dog to another location. Neighbors will not appreciate a barking dog, especially if you are not around!
When buying a birdfeeder, look for one of the highest quality you can afford. Cheap plastic feeders are easy to find, but they will not withstand the varying temperatures and use. A better quality birdfeeder will allow you to feed the birds for years to come without having to repair or replace your feeder each season. There are also some truly ingenious bird feeder designs, like the one from Brome Bird Care. Their feeders allow for your bird friends to come and enjoy a meal, while keeping out large birds and squirrels. This saves money on seed as well as discouraging unwanted visitors from returning.
